RMHC Scholars

RMHC SCHOLARSHIPS

RMHC of Connecticut and Western Massachusetts will award a total of $50,000 to local high school seniors this academic year through its Scholarship Program. Students of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply, with specific funds allocated for eligible Hispanic applicants via the RMHC/HACER (Hispanic American Commitment to Education Resources) Scholarship and additional dollars available for any student, regardless of race or ethnicity, via the RMHC Scholars Scholarship. LOCAL HERO AWARDS

RMHC held a wonderful reception at the Connecticut Governor's Residence in Hartford on Tuesday, October 27, honoring 10 area teachers with the third annual RMHC Local Hero Award in recognition of their excellence in education. RMHC Board members were joined by local McDonald's owners in congratulating the teachers, who each received a commemorative plaque and a $500 grant for their school. The teachers, their school principals and district superintendents enjoyed hors d'oeuvres and cocktails at the unique venue, with the highlight being an unexpected visit from Governor Rell herself!

RECENT GRANT RECIPIENTS

RMHC of Connecticut and Western Massachusetts is proud to support local non-profits that benefit children, and recently granted nearly $60,000 to nine deserving organizations.

Boys & Girls Village in Milford - $10,249 for a program using musical instruments to foster participants’ behavioral and social functioning

InterCommunity in East Hartford - $2,138 for therapeutic supplies used during psychiatric therapy sessions with children

KIDSAFE CT in Rockville - $7,390 for recreational materials and educational supplies aiding children at risk of abuse or neglect

Link to Libraries in East Longmeadow - $4,000 to purchase books that are distributed to underserved libraries, schools and non-profit organizations

Martin Luther King Jr. Charter School of Excellence in Springfield - $4,147 for digital cameras and equipment augmenting a science curriculum for inner-city school children

New Opportunities, Inc. in Waterbury - $7,000 for the Hoops4Life summer basketball program

PARC in Plainville - $1,479 to purchase supplies for a camp serving children with developmental disabilities

Springfield Girls Club and Family Center at Trinity United Methodist Church (TUMC) - $8,214 for sports equipment and arts and craft supplies for an after-school program

Springfield Jewish Community Center - $14,000 for specially outfitted tricycles provided to physically challenged children

HOUSE UPDATES

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Connecticut and Western Massachusetts is proud to support the local Ronald McDonald Houses in New Haven, Conn., and Springfield, Mass., through grants, quarterly donations and continuous collaboration.

The Ronald McDonald House of Connecticut is kicking off the holiday season with the 20th Annual Trees of Hope Holiday Spectacular, a free event open to the public featuring musical presentations and weekend family fun. The event runs Saturday, December 5 through Sunday, December 13, 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. daily at the Long Wharf Maritime Center in New Haven. Hundreds of decorated trees, holiday baskets and gingerbread houses will be on display and raffled on the final day (tickets are sold throughout the ten day event). Additionally, Dr. Sukru Emre and the Yale-New Haven Hospital liver transplant team will be honored for saving the lives of hundreds of children catastrophically ill with liver disease. The Ronald McDonald House of Springfield, Mass., will be celebrating its Lights of Love event on Saturday, December 5, from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. at the House at 34 Chapin Terrace in Springfield. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be visiting from the North Pole, tours of the House will be given, the Teen Board will be caroling to enhance the holiday spirit, cookies and cocoa will be served, and the tree lighting ceremony will be held at approximately 5:30 p.m. You can purchase a light in honor of or in memory of a person whom you name, with proceeds helping our special families.
