I actually first heard about the Ronald McDonald House Charities from being an avid NY Rangers hockey fan. My all-time favorite player, Hall of Famer Brian Leetch, is not only from nearby Cheshire, CT, but he has long been the team’s spokesperson for the House. So when I noticed directional signs to the RMHC while driving through New Haven last April, my curiosity inspired me to stop by and find out more about how the charity worked and what volunteer opportunities might be available. Despite my impromptu visit, Wendy was incredibly gracious from the moment I knocked on the door. She took the time to give me a comprehensive tour of the House as well a brief overview of how it operated. Quite simply, Wendy made me feel so welcome, I knew just based on that one visit I wanted to be part of this altruistic organization.

And I’m happy to say the experience has been even better than I anticipated. All of the staff members at RMHC are cordial, professional and extremely helpful. They make a point of delegating things they know I can accomplish, and more importantly, they are very appreciative when even the smallest task is completed. What’s nice, too, is that many of the skills I use as technical librarian at Derby Public Library directly transfer to the needs of the House like solving computer-related issues, using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint as well as answering the phones. And the best part is all of this effort goes towards making the House a better place for the guests. An added bonus is the beautiful baby grand located in the House’s living room. Having played the piano since I was a kid, I cannot tell you how rewarding it is to be able to entertain guests and staff members during my weekly shift. I’ve even had the benefit of teaching some of the children who stay here how to play. My parents taught me early on: “Music will always bring joy and happiness to those around you.” Well, the same can certainly be said about the RMHC and the lives it touches. Thank you so much for letting me be part of the “family.”
