According to Webster’s Dictionary a volunteer is: a person who voluntarily offers himself or herself for a service or undertaking. A person who performs a service willingly and without pay.
These definitions seem to fall short when describing the Ronald McDonald House of Connecticut volunteers.
The dedicated individuals and groups who become involved as volunteers with the Ronald McDonald House of Connecticut selflessly offer their time and talents, often, making a commitment of an indeterminate amount of time to support the mission of the House. As many of us know, volunteers are the heart of the House. Our House volunteers come from all walks of life; they are high school or University students, retirees, single parents, families, and professionals. They come seeking opportunities to give back to their community, to help where help is needed. Volunteers are altruistic by nature; they want to share, grow and learn from their experiences. The recipients of this largesse are the families of ill and hospitalized children who are receiving treatment at Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital.
My own experience as a Ronald McDonald House volunteer covers the gamut: For over 3 decades, I have been privileged to have been a part of 5 Ronald McDonald Houses, both in the United States and in Canada. I have served on multiple boards, volunteered on various committees and have worked on countless fund raising events. I have enjoyed every minute and look forward to continue my commitment as President of the Ronald McDonald House Advisory Board.
One of the primary responsibilities for Ronald McDonald House volunteers is to help provide a “home away from home” for each family. They do this in so many ways, both seen and unseen. From welcoming families to the House, staffing the front office, providing a meal, helping to clean, restock and answer phones, assist with fund raising events, run errands, lend an ear or giving hugs. All of this and so much more
is what is received on a day to day basis from our wonderfully dedicated and greatly treasured volunteers. We can’t thank you enough!!
